In the Studio: Gabino A. Castelán

Gabino A. Castelán in conversation with Diana Flatto, assistant curator of Visual Arts.

Join us live on Instagram from your cell phone, or watch here and on YouTube live or after, for a series of remote visits to artists' studios to bring Americas Society's Visual Arts public programs to your home. Every Wednesday this month, contemporary artists will dialogue with our Visual Arts department about their work and practice.

About the artist:

Gabino A. Castelán (b.1986) is a New York-based artist born in Epatlán, Puebla, Mexico. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is driven by research, process, and experimentation. Castelán works in drawing, painting, performance, and installation. His work communicates narratives of migration, labor, leisure, and agony, to create alternative representations that shift from one identity to another. Castelán holds a BFA (2012) and an MFA (2017) in painting from Hunter College. His previous residencies include Atelier Mondial in Basel, Switzerland (2020), the Children's Museum of Manhattan (2019), and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2014). Castelán is an alumnus of the 39th AIM Fellowship program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts (2019). In 2018, Castelán was nominated and selected to travel to Honduras as a part of the U.S. Department of Cultural Affairs Arts Envoy Program. He was an artist-teacher for the Joan Mitchell Foundation (2012-2016). In 2015, Castelán created a manual to guide the beginning of a long-term project named, Cultural Workers. Cultural Workers functions as a platform to gather a temporary collective made up of organized local and foreign creative-workers to create collaborative art, culture, and design projects within a specific community.
